TerraFlow’s LDUPS™ Architecture Demonstrates Ultra-Fast System Response with Integrated VRFB Stack

Contributor

TerraFlow Energy’s Long Duration Uninterruptible Power Supply (LDUPS™) architecture, integrated with Storion Energy’s vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) stack power assembly, delivers ultra-fast DC-link control for AI data centers and other mission-critical infrastructure, while enabling new grid service capabilities at scale.

The system integrates the VRFB stack directly into the DC bus architecture, enabling sub-5 millisecond bidirectional current control that stabilizes load transitions and maintains continuous power quality across generator, grid, and inverter events.

By combining TerraFlow’s system design with Storion’s high-speed electrochemical performance, the architecture achieves capacitor-like response speeds while retaining the ability to deliver sustained energy over extended durations. The result is a unified long-duration system that enhances operational resilience, reduces generator stress, and supports fast-response ancillary services.

Key Findings

Stack Intrinsic Speed
Single-cell testing shows approximately 8.1 microsecond reaction time and approximately 43 A/μs slew rate (area-scaled), confirming that the stack and underlying chemistry are not the rate-limiting factor.

System Response
In UPS testing, inverter output reaches target current in approximately 250 microseconds, with full stack takeover completing in approximately 1.2 to 2.5 milliseconds, depending on initial conditions.

Stability
An 8.5-second, 14.3 kHz burst sequence showed no measurable drift in current, voltage, or energy per cycle, confirming stable operation under sustained high-frequency conditions.
